Seth Van Grinsven

Senior Software Engineer · Fullstack
Summary

Senior fullstack software engineer at Google, working on Display & Video 360. Eleven years building enterprise web applications, real-time marketplace platforms and distributed microservices — most recently high-concurrency bulk operations, globally distributed storage migrations, AI-assisted search interfaces, and autonomous agent tooling for developer workflows. Comfortable owning a feature from schema and RPC design through to the pixel.

Employment history

Senior Software Engineer, Fullstack — Google · Ads, Display & Video 360

Jan 2020 – Present
  • Led multiple top-level platform projects from design through launch, coordinating with stakeholders, external teams and assigned resources. Area expert across several parts of DV360 and the team's primary front-end resource, with projects that opened new revenue streams and reached org-wide impact.
  • High-throughput bulk operations engine. Designed and delivered a fullstack bulk execution system letting media buyers attach hundreds of curated inventory deals across dozens of campaign line items in parallel, with transactional validation, rate-limited backend RPCs, optimistic UI and telemetry.
  • AI-assisted marketplace discovery. Led technical delivery of the next-generation media exploration experience, integrating generative-AI search that translates free-form natural language queries into structured inventory targeting criteria.
  • Distributed storage migration. Migrated core backend storage layers to globally distributed databases (Cloud Spanner / F1), restructuring schema indexes and optimizing read/write DAOs for low-latency queries — with no user disruption.
  • Cross-exchange publisher platform. Architected a unified administrative and buyer-facing platform normalizing and aggregating inventory from disparate global supply-side ad exchanges into a single directory, backed by Spanner DAOs and gRPC services.
  • AI developer infrastructure. Built autonomous developer subagents and rules engines automating pre-flight validation, static analysis, code review and remote CI presubmit verification. Authored internal documentation shared across Google and gave org tech talks on context engineering in Gemini CLI; built MCP servers, custom functions and AI contexts the team extends and builds on.
  • Monorepo modernization. Drove a codebase-wide migration of dozens of monolithic Angular components to isolated structured modules, eliminating circular dependencies, improving tree-shaking and reducing production bundle sizes.
  • Testing & CI. Standardized PageObject harnesses, mock injectors and visual-regression screenshot pipelines; eliminated flakiness across large integration suites and tuned container resource limits for developer concurrency.
  • 1,770+ merged production changelists to date.

Software Engineer — Google.org · Health Equity Tracker

Jan 2021 – Jun 2021
  • Requested a six-month loan to a Google-led philanthropic project and led delivery at a startup pace, materializing requirements directly from non-engineering stakeholders.
  • Built a large data pipeline that ingested public datasets and transformed them into performant, optimized data structures for the public tracker.
  • Credited on the project's contributor page — healthequitytracker.org/aboutus.

Frontend Software Engineer — Indeed · SMB

Dec 2018 – Dec 2019
  • Main frontend developer on Jobs Management and owner of the Jobs Management deployable — the heart of the employer experience and one of Indeed's primary revenue generators.
  • Responsible with the team for reviewing code contributions to the platform from other teams across the company.
  • Used data analysis to drive A/B experimentation and shipped features targeting revenue and mutual engagement.

Software Engineer — Microsoft · DevDiv, Visual Studio (XAML Modern App Experiences)

Jul 2017 – Dec 2018
  • Owned the Universal Windows Platform project system: device connection for remote deployment, the full packaging workflow, and project system integrations.
  • Built and maintained tooling for new features released by the Windows SDK and Windows platform teams.
  • Prototyped .NET Core 3.0 and Arm64 support.
  • Led an accessibility pilot program to discover and fix accessibility issues before shipping.
  • Created a continuous integration pipeline for telemetry dashboards in VSO.
  • Worked directly with customers to reduce pain points in the development process, using usage data to determine which features mattered and how they were used.

Software Designer — VSP Global

2014 – 2017
  • One of two front-end designers on a 12-person team distributed across three cities, delivering a multimillion-dollar enterprise application that replaced an out-of-house system costing roughly $500K/year to lease.
  • Built data tables capable of rendering results from 64 million possible unique input combinations across at least six different output formats.
  • Moved into a backend role writing Drools rules-engine logic for doctor verbalizations on medical benefit reports — the coverage screen a doctor sees at point of care.
  • President of the VSP Angular Guild, 2015–2017.
Outside work

Side project — independent game development

Evenings and weekends. Five mobile titles in development across two stacks, the first preparing for Google Play release. Full write-ups on the games page.

Mobile games — sole developer

2026 – Present
  • Architected each title around a pure, deterministic rules core with zero platform imports and a single mutation funnel, so identical game code runs on Android, iOS and a headless test harness — replays, mid-run saves and golden-trace regression tests fall out of the design rather than being bolted on.
  • Built a solver-driven content pipeline for Comet Caddy that generates candidate gravity-golf holes, proves each solvable with the game's own physics, measures its aim window to derive par, and assigns a difficulty tier — producing a validated 200-hole, ten-world campaign.
  • Built headless balance-simulation harnesses that play thousands of runs across seeds and parameter sweeps to surface difficulty cliffs and dominant strategies before release.
  • Shipped end to end: game design, simulation, rendering, pixel-art generation pipeline, ad and billing integration, store listings and Android/iOS project setup.
  • Stacks: Kotlin Multiplatform + Compose Multiplatform; TypeScript + Canvas + Capacitor.
